In conjunction with the Chair of EM, the Vice Chair will have oversight over the Faculty Appointment, Review and Advancement (FARA) process, they will provision or connect EM Faculty to appropriate mentorship opportunities, oversee faculty wellness evaluation and initiatives, and oversee the implementation of equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives within the department. The chosen individual will report directly to the Department Chair and will be a member of the Executive Committee within the Department. In addition, participation in key University of Utah Health Committees will be expected.

The newly created Department of Emergency Medicine is rapidly expanding. Currently, the Department staffs three emergency departments, with a fourth department expected to start in 2026. The Department offers fellowships in research, ultrasound, palliative care, wilderness medicine, global medicine, EMS and Sports Medicine. Currently, the Department has 28 residents with planned growth to 36 residents by 2025. The University of Utah Emergency Department is a Level 1 trauma center, a STEMI center, and a comprehensive stroke center.
