Vice Chair, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
The Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a visionary and collaborative physician leader who will provide vision and leadership for the department’s continued journey as a national model for advancing diversity, equity and an inclusive culture in the field of Emergency Medicine. The Vice Chair will advise and work closely with the Department Chair and Vice Chair for Faculty Equity, Empowerment and Engagement and serves as a senior advisor to the Chair’s leadership team on all aspects related to best practices for promoting an inclusive and equitable culture and climate in the department as experienced by faculty, staff, and learners. The Vice Chair partners with our human resources team, medical directors and other section leaders and in addition to the School of Medicine's Office of Equity and Inclusion, aligns with the University’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion concerning diversity and inclusion best practices, programming, and strategic planning. The position oversees the identification, development, implementation, and evaluation of such initiatives. The successful candidate will demonstrate integrity, strong leadership skills, emotional intelligence and exercise cultural awareness.
The Vice Chair will be a member of the department’s Vice-Chairs committee and will lead/advise the department Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, and serve on the SOM DEI Council. In alignment with the School of Medicine’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals, the Vice Chair will advance a department strategic plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and develop, track, and communicate programmatic outcomes. The Vice Chair will lead group discussions on the impact of bias/microaggressions on workplace behaviors. The Vice Chair will work to identify sources of systematic bias, exclusion, and inequity in hiring, compensation, resources, and opportunity and will seek to remove such barriers.
Essential duties and expectations include:
Mission Vision and Values
- The Vice Chair will embrace the Mission, Vision, Values of the Department of Emergency Medicine with a commitment to drive the department from excellence to eminence in DEI, aligning strategic priorities within the department, setting goals and milestones, holding oneself, their direct reports, faculty and staff accountable.
- The Vice Chair should be a trusted counselor to the Chair and to the Department’s senior leadership and a trusted partner to the leadership of the organization. The Vice Chair should be committed to working with the Chair to build a workplace culture that can execute change to meet business objectives.
- The Vice Chair must be able to anticipate challenges, seek and interpret relevant information, and make recommendations and decisions, and must be able to learn continuously in this arena and to share knowledge and insight generously with colleagues. The Vice Chair should be entrepreneurial leader who can form alignment around the pursuit of important goals or the response to substantial challenges; in this regard, the Vice Chair will apply strong organizational, leadership, and management skills to be an effective agent of change in ways that enhance the Department and organization’s reputation, expand, or conserve its resources, and advance its programs. In all, the Vice Chair should act based on a deep interest in and commitment to the mission of the Department and organization.
- The Vice Chair will have strong communication skills (verbal, written, and listening), and the ability to communicate difficult and complex matters effectively to a range of audiences and skill levels. The Vice Chair will also have strong interpersonal skills and will be an effective negotiator able to find ways to balance interests within the Department’s mission areas and strategic priorities. The Vice Chair will be a team-builder, a consensus-builder, a counselor, a mediator, and a facilitator.
People and Culture
- The Vice Chair will work closely with faculty and staff search committees, the human resources team, residency and fellowship program administration, and department/division leadership to provide effective strategies for identifying diverse candidates and addressing bias in the screening and selection processes as well as provide leadership and vision to advance DEI across the clinical research and teaching missions of the department.
- The Vice Chair will be an effective developer of people who can manage a large and complex portfolio of issues and rapidly assess situations with multiple outcomes and consequences. S/he will be a flexible problem-solver with the ability to create or influence win-win outcomes.
- The Vice Chair will engage in the development and implementation of policies and programs to promote DEI in collaboration with the Chair, Emory Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, and the School of Medicine.
- The Vice Chair will serve as a subject matter expert, advocate, and resource for the department and promote awareness and action regarding bias, stereotyping, and microaggressions.
- The Vice Chair will partner with external organizations and institutions such as SAEM and AAMC to identify opportunities to align and meet departmental diversity and inclusion goals. (e.g., clinical care delivery, UME & GME education).
- The Vice Chair will serve as a results-oriented catalyst for change throughout the Department, inspiring colleagues to achieve new levels of expertise, confidence, and productivity while developing and implementing strategies to address specific concerns and issues.
- The Vice Chair will work to facilitate the recruitment, retention and development of diverse faculty by collaborating with Department leadership to ensure the identification, promotion, achievement and success of a qualified candidates and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
- The Vice Chair will inspire change by supporting colleagues in their professional development and sponsorship and promote the recognition and advancement of those typically under-represented in Emergency Medicine.
Department Programs Development
- The Vice Chair will assess the department’s current diversity, equity and inclusion programs and strengthen efforts to remove barriers that negatively impact faculty, staff and trainee culture, morale, retention, and advancement. The Vice Chair will drive the development of such programs and activities that anticipate and meet departmental needs. The Vice Chair would keep abreast of and utilize best practices and current trends in diversity to inform program and policy development work.
- The Vice Chair will be responsible for creating at least 1-3 annual diversity, equity and inclusion-focused events and enhancing visiting professor lectures and visits – both selection of speakers/visitors as well as a dedicated effort on how to welcome them and demonstrate Department culture during their visit.
- The Vice Chair will collaborate with the Communications and Creative Services Team to inform Diversity, Equity and Inclusion activities and communications, such as through the Department Website, Newsletter, social media etc.
- The Vice Chair will develop a system to use institutional data to measure and benchmark DEI metrics applicable to the department’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals and track progress to promote accountability. The Vice Chair will present periodic progress reports to departmental leadership.
Financial and Strategic Planning
- The Vice Chair is centrally involved in the Department’s strategic plan and devotes significant time to philanthropy efforts and grantsmanship in support of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. The Vice Chair will prepare an annual report on progress of Department of Emergency Medicine's Diversity Equity and Inclusion strategic initiatives.
- The Vice Chair should develop a formal succession plan for their position(s).
Candidate Qualifications
The candidate will have the following credentials:
- Doctor of Medicine from an accredited school of medicine; Board Certification in Emergency Medicine and eligibility for licensure in Georgia are required.
- Eligible for an appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine.
- Meet eligibility requirements for credentialing as part of the Emory Healthcare professional staff.
