Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, Hang Seng offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.
We are currently seeking a high-caliber professional to join our department as Director, Special Projects.
The Director, Special Projects is a flexible senior resource deployed across priority initiatives for Hang Seng Bank, providing rapid capacity and leadership where it matters most. The role supports delivery of strategic projects and initiatives end-to-end and strengthens connectivity across the Hang Seng management team and relevant Group programme teams to ensure alignment, pace, and high-quality outcomes.
Principal responsibilities
Strategic project delivery (priority "drop-in" resource)
- Act as a senior "surge" resource across multiple workstreams, stepping in quickly to shape, unblock, and deliver the highest-priority initiatives at any given time.
- Establish clear problem statements, scope, success measures, and delivery plans for assigned initiatives, ensuring outcomes are measurable and aligned to business strategy.
- Drive execution through disciplined governance: milestones, RAID (risks, assumptions, issues, dependencies), decision logs, and stakeholder management.
- Identify delivery risks early and propose pragmatic mitigations, escalating where needed with clear options and recommendations.
- Produce high-quality materials (papers, packs, briefings) for EMT, governance forums, and senior stakeholders.
- Help "join the dots" across HASE-sponsored initiatives, ensuring interdependencies are understood and managed across functions and businesses
- Support consistent ways of working across projects (cadence, reporting, decision-making), improving transparency and pace.
- Facilitate alignment sessions and Steerco-style discussions to drive decisions, resolve conflicts, and maintain momentum.
- Act as a trusted advisor to HASE management team members on project framing, stakeholder strategy, and communications.
- Partner effectively with HSBC Group project/programme teams to ensure local requirements are represented and delivery is aligned to Group standards and timelines.
- Translate Group programme expectations into local execution plans, ensuring local governance, controls, and stakeholder needs are met.
- Maintain strong relationships with Group stakeholders to anticipate changes, manage impacts, and avoid surprises.
- Apply strong commercial judgement to evaluate options, trade-offs, and impacts (financial, customer, operational, regulatory, reputational).
- Provide structured analysis and recommendations that support decision-making and prioritisation.
- Operate with a strong risk and control mindset, ensuring initiatives are delivered in line with HSBC policies, regulatory expectations, and local governance.
- Promote the adoption of How We Lead cultural mindset and tools across Hang Seng
Requirements
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to assess trade-offs and drive value-focused outcomes.
- Broad familiarity across multiple areas of the bank (e.g., products, operations, risk, finance, technology/change), enabling rapid context-switching and credibility with senior stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication: able to produce crisp executive-level papers and present clearly, including under time pressure.
- Proven experience working with HSBC Group project teams (or equivalent large, matrixed global programmes), including navigating governance and stakeholder complexity.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without formal authority and to operate effectively in ambiguity.
- Strong programme/project leadership capability (planning, governance, RAID management, dependency management).
- Experience supporting OpCo-level governance and decision-making forums.
- Exposure to regulatory-driven change and/or major transformation programmes.
- Familiarity with HSBC change frameworks, governance standards, and reporting disciplines.
- Cantonese and/or Mandarin language capabilities is preferred
