Description
Starting Salary $66,316/year - Maximum Salary $98,947/year (After 5 years). Scheduled increases for July 1, 2026, with projected maximum salary of $110,549/year in July 2029. For more information, please contact Human Resources.
Fire Fighter candidates from IAFF represented fire departments with one or more years of experience may qualify for higher starting wages.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Age 18 or older by the closing date for accepting applications
- U.S. citizen
- Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
- Possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in the State of Michigan
- Possess a Paramedic License from the Michigan Department of Health
- Possess Fire Fighter I and II by May 8, 2026
WRITTEN EXAM:
* Must pass the written test administered through EMPCO Inc. within the past year with a score of 70 percent or higher, and the oral interview with a score of 70 percent or higher. The written exam is worth 70% and oral interview is worth 30% of your total score.
* Applicants must create a profile, register and take the written exam to be administered by EMPCO, Inc. Go to https://www.empco.net/testing to create a profile, register for the written exam and pay the exam fee. Applicants must complete the online profile and take the written exam by April 24, 2026.
MUST ALSO PASS THE FOLLOWING:
- Written test administered by Empco Inc.
- An oral board interview
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Background investigation
- Physical examination including drug screening and a psychological evaluation within the guidelines established by the City, as modified by current law
PREFERENCE POINTS:
At the time the eligibility list is certified, preference points will be added to a passing score for the following:
- Education:
1 point - Certificate in Fire Science from an accredited college or university.
2 points - Associate degree or higher degree in Fire Science from an accredited college or university.
To receive preference points, you must provide an official (sealed by the school) college transcript.
- Veteran’s Preference:
1 point for service during a period of war or receipt of an expeditionary or campaign service medal during an emergency condition, with an honorable discharge. You must provide a copy of your Form DD214 or NGB22 to qualify.
Application Process:
* Applicants who score 70% or higher on the EMPCO, Inc. written exam by the above deadline and meet Warren’s preliminary requirements can visit https://www.cityofwarren.org/jobs/ to view and print out the application. Applications can be turned in via in person, mail or fax. Completed applications are due by April 24, 2026 by 5 pm to Human Resources. Please note: City Hall is closed on April 3 and 6, 2026
* You will sign up for oral board examination at the time your completed application is accepted. They will take place on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Please return the completed application packet found below to the City of Warren Human Resources Department with all required original documents by the deadline of 5:00 pm, Friday, April 24, 2026.
A one (1) year eligibility list will be created.
