The Fire Communications Supervisor leads the Oakland Fire Department’s 9-1-1 Dispatch Center, supervising dispatchers and overseeing daily emergency call operations. The role ensures fire and medical calls are quickly and accurately processed, coordinates response during major incidents, manages staffing and training, and maintains dispatch technology and procedures.
The City of Oakland is hiring a Fire Communications Supervisor. You will supervise the fire dispatch center, where 9-1-1 calls for fire and medical emergencies are answered and dispatched.
The dispatch center:
Handles about 70,000 emergency calls each year, including about 49,000 medical calls.v
As the supervisor, you:
Oversee daily operations in the Fire Dispatch Center.
Support programs like MACRO (Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland).
Lead and mentor a small team of dispatche

Requirements
This recruitment will produce two eligible lists. The restricted list will be for full-time, permanent part-time, or part-timeCity and Port of Oakland employees who maintain employment for the duration of the recruitment and pass all stages of the recruitment process. The open list will be for all other applicants who pass all stages of the recruitment process.
Experience:
Five years of experience as a journey-level Fire Communications Dispatcher. One(1) year of lead or supervisory experience is desirable. License or Certificate / Other Requirements:
Must be a state-certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher
Successful incumbents in this position are expected to operate an automotive vehicle in the performance of assignedduties. Due to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked, public transportation may not be a cost-effective or efficient method of traveling to the various locations required.
Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver’s License throughout the tenure of the employment or demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
Must pass a thorough background investigation.
Desirable Qualifications: Lead or supervisory dispatch experience in a public safety environment Customer service experience Bilingual skills Military experience, including military reserve programs Law Enforcement, Fire Technology, or Administrator of Justice coursework EMT experience or other coursework in emergency medicine Advanced First Aid and/or CPR certifications
