Company History

Lander County was established on December 19, 1862, and with its establishment, the Lander County Sheriff's Office (LASO) began its commitment to enforcing the law and maintaining order in the region. The County was established during the Nevada territorial period following a mining boom on the Reese River and was recognized as one of the original 11 counties when Nevada achieved statehood in 1864. The county was originally named after General Frederick W. Lander, an American civil engineer and explorer. The initial county seat was Jacobsville, a now-abandoned mining camp, before officially moving to Battle Mountain, its current location.

The Lander County Sheriff's Office was central to the challenges faced during the Nevada mining boom of the mid-to-late 19th century.

Law Enforcement Challenges: The boom brought rapid population growth, wealth disparities, and a need for law and order in the remote mining towns like Austin and Battle Mountain. Early Sheriffs often managed vast territories with limited resources.
Initial Sheriff: The first Sheriff of Lander County was George Washington Jacobs, elected or appointed around 1859.

Over the years, the LASO adapted to changes in the region, including the decline of gold and silver mining and the shift toward modern ranching and transportation, notably with the transcontinental railroad passing through the area.
