POSITION: SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR
PAY RATE: 21.90/HOURLY
SHIFTS: 6 HOURS 8AM-3PM
DURATION: PART TIME 6 WEEKS DURING THE SUMMER (TENTATIVELY JUNE-JULY) ***DAYTIME HOURS***

LAUSD IS HIRING SWIMMING INSTRUCTORS FOR OUR BEYOND SWIM READY PROGRAM!
JOB DESCRIPTION: Conducts swimming classes in District Youth Services programs that include teaching beginner through advanced techniques. A Swimming Instructor (Recreation) teaches swimming classes. A Senior Swimming Instructor teaches swimming classes, trains pool swimming personnel, and is responsible for unit personnel and pool facilities in the absence of the Pool Supervisor.
Requirements
Typical Duties
- Teaches swimming, lifesaving, and diving to persons of all ages who have varying degrees of skill by following prescribed lesson plans and developing supplementary plans as necessary.
- Rotates lifeguard duties on an hourly basis with instructional duties.
- Checks air temperature and chemical content and temperature of water and brings deviations to the attention of persons responsible for pool maintenance.
- Assists in setting up and securing portable pools.
- Sets up and inspects pool equipment and reports unsanitary and unsafe conditions to the appropriate authority.
- Performs minor emergency repair, maintenance, and clean-up work required to prevent accidents and to maintain maximum health conditions.
- Assists with public relations activities, such as orientation lectures for parents and children.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics
- Knowledge of techniques used in teaching swimming, diving, and water safety.
- Knowledge of methods of rescuing people from water.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the operation and use of school swimming pools.
- Knowledge of first aid, including methods of artificial respiration.
- Knowledge of health standards and safety practices for swimming pools.
- Ability to swim and apply water rescue methods, such as breaks, holds, and carries.
- Ability to speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard in a noisy facility.
- Ability to remain calm in emergencies.
- Ability to work effectively with students, school employees, and the public
Experience
- Demonstrated ability to teach swimming.
- Three months of experience in teaching swimming.
Education
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
Health
Physical and mental fitness to engage in supervision of students as certified by a licensed physician and
surgeon or medical officer pursuant to Education Code Section 44839 and evidence of freedom from
active tuberculosis pursuant to Education Code Section 49406.
Special Requirements
1. Possession of valid certificates in the following areas:
a. American Red Cross - Lifeguard Training
b. American Red Cross - Water Safety Instructor
c. American Red Cross - First-Aid Basics or Community First Aid and Safety
d. An American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or recognized Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT) certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
2. A valid California Driver License.
3. Use of an automobile.
4. Annual Blood Borne Pathogen training (new employees must complete prior to employment).
